The Evening Concert

Brahms' Opus 111 String Quintet was written in 1890. It is the second of those works in that form and uses the two viola arrangement like the First String Quintet; music from "The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center" and the “Spoleto Chamber Music Festival”.

Maestro Gilbert chose to commemorate at the 10th-anniversary concert for those who passed in the 9-11 tragedy by leading the Philharmonic in Mahler's 2nd Symphony "Resurrection", heard on tonight's "Evening Concert".

The 2013 Britten centenary celebration by the San Francisco Symphony continues with this concert recording of the aching, exquisite Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings.

The Jerusalem Quartet is an Israeli string quartet formed in 1993. Their most recent CD release is Beethoven early string quartets. Tonight they play Haydn's "Bird" quartet.

Leonard Bernstein was Music Director of the Philharmonic frmo 1958 to 1969. This program features the conductor leading the Philharmonic in his compositions, perhaps the most "authentic" interpretations of musical works.

Prokofiev's "2nd Violin Concerto" dates from 1935, the same year as Berg's "Violin Concerto". Each of these works had it's premeire, synchronously so, in Spain (Prokofiev: Madird, Berg: Barcelona).

Music Director Riccardo Muti put together this program of music by Italian composers and works inspired by Italy, like Mendelssohn's "Italian" Symphony.
