The Evening Concert

The St. Petersburg [String] Quartet formed in Russia in 1985. That's more than 100 years after the compostion of the works they play tonight on the Evening Concert.

Beethoven's "Second Piano Concerto" in B-flat major was actually the first to be composed but the second to be published. Regardless of that historical fact, this concerto is one of Beethoven's "more cheerful" works.

Dvorak spent time in Spillville, Iowa summer of 1893 and from that came his famous "American String Quartet" (not heard tonight) followed by his Viola Quintet (String Quaintet No. 3) (heard tonight). The two pieces exhibiti musical and stylisitic similarities.

Haydn's "Sun" Quartets [his Opus 20] are called that because there is an image of the sun on the cover of the publication of those six string quartets.
