Illinois election officials have decided the state will remain in Crosscheck, a multi-state voter registration database that critics claim is inaccurate and could lead to security breaches.

Federal election law requires states to keep accurate and up-to-date voter registration rolls. But one tool to help them do so is at the center of a partisan debate. In Illinois, many Democrats are calling on the state Board of Elections to stop participation in the Interstate Voter Registration Crosscheck Program, or Crosscheck, for short.

Officials with the Illinois State Board of Elections say the nearly two-year budget stalemate could interfere with preparations for next year’s election. The warning came at a legislative budget hearing Sunday afternoon.

The Illinois State Board of Elections has formally removed David Gill from the ballot. The Bloomington physician was running as an independent for Congress in the 13th District, which includes Springfield, Decatur and Champaign. Gill's attorney, Sam Cahnman, says he'll continue to pursue an appeal.
