Rachmaninov's "1st" [Piano Concerto] was written in 1891 and revised in 1917. It is usual to hear the 1917 version not the manuscript (1891) version.
The 'Third Piano Concerto" was written after Rachmaninov overcame 'writer's block' by daily reciting aloud positive affirmations (paraphrased) "I will compose again" and "I will compose successful and well-received compositions". It worked!
Carpenter is a new breed of organist; he tours with an organ that uses organ sounds sampled from famous organs around the world.
And, oh, by the way, Paul Lewis drops by Symphony Center at just the right time to play Beethoven' "Emperor" Piano Concerto with the group.
