The Evening Concert

October 16, 1912. I remember it well (jest!). It was the day of the premiere of the Schoenberg melodrama "Pierrot Luanire". It was September 28, 1918 for the premiere of "A Soldier's Tale" by Stravinsky.

The Third Symphony of Beethoven bears the title "Eroica" (Heroic). There are many great stories, some true, some not, about how he came to title it thusly.

Mozart played harpsichord and later fortepiano, violin, and viola. The anwer is out there as to the question "Did Mozart favor the viola over the violin?" His 'Viola" Quintets, like the one tonight, reflect that favoring.

The story of Daphnis and Chloe originated in the second century CE (AD). the Ballet Russes asked Ravel to write music for it's 19-teens adaptation of the story. He obliged and completed the music in 1912.

Rach's 1st Piano Concerto was published as his Opus 1. It dates from 1891 with a later revision in 1917. Like Beethoven's "First" Piano Concerto, this one was not written first!
