In the past we've talked about efforts to bring more carbon sequestration to Central Illinois, as the region is naturally capable of storing carbon captured from the atmosphere. But some of those efforts fall within the range of the Mahomet Aquifer. The water source is used by 800,000 people for drinking, industrial and commercial use. There are growing concerns that putting carbon capturing pipelines too close to the aquifer potentially taint a major source of drinking water for the region. State legislation is being filed to prevent carbon sequestration pipelines from emerging with the aquifer's footprint.
