Self, Weber Speak at Wayne McClain Funeral
People who gathered to remember basketball coach Wayne McClain say it was like him not to reveal he was ill with cancer.
Former Illinois and now Kansas State coach Bruce Weber was among dozens who spoke Wednesday in person or by video during McClain's funeral.
Kansas coach Bill Self, who hired McClain at Illinois, also spoke.
Weber told the more than 1,000 people who gathered for McClain's funeral that he was mad McClain hadn't shared the bad news. But he added "that just wasn't him.''
Terry McClain said he spoke to his 60-year-old brother regularly but didn't know he was ill until days before his Oct. 15 death.
Wayne McClain made his name as head coach at Peoria Manual High School. He won three state championships there in the 1990s.
